Dr. Tonny Tumwesigye

Dr. Tonny Tumwesigye is the Board Chairman of Doctor's Choice and the Executive Director of the Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau (UPMB). He holds a Master of Science Degree in Public Health and a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health from the University of London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom, as well as a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Makerere University in Kampala.

An experienced institutional and programme manager, Dr. Tumwesigye has over ten years of experience that began as a frontline general practitioner in a rural, resource-limited setting. He served as the Medical Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer at Kisiizi Hospital for nine years, where he oversaw the transformation of Kisiizi Hospital and Kisiizi School of Nursing into one of the best general hospitals and training health institutions in Uganda.

During this time he also served as a director for Kisiizi Hospital Power Limited, one of the first mini-hydro electricity companies in Uganda, where he played a key role in establishing generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity in South Western Uganda, sustaining the hospital while economically empowering surrounding communities. Since 2009 he has been the World Health Organisation African Partnerships for Patient Safety focal point in Uganda, helping co-develop the patient safety agenda for first-wave hospitals in Africa. In 2010, he received a Presidential Honour, the Distinguished Service Award, for his outstanding contribution to health services delivery in Uganda.
